The YEG Yule Book Flood started in 2025, inspired by Jólabókaflóðið, an Icelandic term referring to the annual release of new books (hence, the “flood”) occurring in the months before Christmas. The books are purchased, gifted, and read all night long with hot chocolate—at least, in the version of the tradition we know of and highly enjoy.

Adopted with gusto by the bookstore and book publishing world, this tradition has come to represent the epitome of bookish winter coziness, a celebration of books as comforting companions in the darkening months, as well as go-to gifts for friends and family.
